Uganda Wild Life Authority UWA has revealed plans to acquire a chopper worth 10billion shillings.
Bashir Hangi, the head of communications, says the chopper will be used to aid rescue of wild animals in distress such as those injured by snares set by poachers inside Murchison falls national game park.
Hangi says the aircraft they currently have is not enough to monitor and rescue animals.
Hangi was speaking yesterday during a media engagement in Gulu.
948 wire snares and 480 metal traps were recovered inside Murchison falls national park in the 2023/2024 financial year, according to statistics by the wild life body.
On the other hand, Uganda wild life Authority (UWA) has denied reports that they care more about wild animals than human beings.
Bashir Hangi says, sometimes they have had to painfully put down (kill) wild animals when they stray and become a threat to communities.
Hangi discourages communities against mobilizing to kill wild animals when they stray on the assumption that UWA doesn’t care about them.
He explains that they have speeded up the compensation process for people who lose their crops and loved ones to wild animals to address the frustration caused by delays.
