West Acholi cooperative revives 78 primary cooperatives

West Acholi Cooperative Union (WACU) has revived 78 primary cooperatives in Gulu, Amuru, Omoro and Nwoya districts in the last 11 years.

Bob Albert Ogen, the General Manager WACU says the union used to have 102 primary cooperatives but only five had survived after the prolonged conflict.

Ogen says a deliberate move to revive the primary cooperatives started in 2015 and has since been successful.

He says that he expects cotton production to improve following the revival of the cooperatives.

Cotton production dropped to 3,000 bales in 2025 from over 10,000 produced annually over 20 years ago.

Ogen however says that instead of just growing cotton for cash as was the norm, members have diversified to other crops like soy bean, maize and rice.
