West Acholi Cooperative Union (WACU) is set to embark on a cattle restocking program on its 7,000 acres of land located in Amuru and Nwoya districts.
Geoffrey Oryem, a member of the board at WACU says they are currently using only 2,000 of the 7,000 acres of land because the bigger chunk has been encroached on by squatters.
Oryem who doubles as the chairperson for production at WACU says they intend to open boundaries of the land, identify the squatters and get into dialogue with them so that they can reclaim the land.
He says they have so far reclaimed 899 acres of their land from one person who was claiming that the land belongs to him.
The Union’s land was encroached on during the decommissioning of Internally Displaced Person’s (IDPs) camps by government.
The encroachers were expected to eventually return to their original villages but many chose to settle there and are now claiming ownership of the land.
