The Northern Uganda Media Club (NUMEC) has launched a three-month digital journalism fellowship for 17 journalists drawn from across Northern Uganda, in a bid to reposition regional reporters in the rapidly evolving media landscape.
The fellowship, under the theme “Telling Northern Uganda’s Stories in the Digital Age,” was officially opened at the Global Friendship Hotel in Gulu.
John Ken Okot, Numec communication and advocacy officer says the training is timely, citing the rapid changes in the media landscape.
He says there is an urgency to sharpen and build the capacity of journalists in the region through training in order to keep them relevant.
Chowoo Willy, Director of CT Media Uganda and lead trainer on data journalism says there’s a need to rebrand journalism in Northern Uganda amid a surge in media consumption.
Alfred Oryem, the Executive Director of NUMEC, notes that transforming how journalists are positioned in this evolving media era is paramount.
With the new training, participants will be equipped to write articles that go beyond the radio newsroom using new media technologies.
The training aims at bridging the gap between traditional reporting and modern newsroom technologies, with awards and grants to be given to the best writers at the end of the fellowship.
