Concerns arise over absence of special needs pupils in private schools

The Education Department of Gulu City is concerned over the absence of special needs pupils in private schools.

Richard Irwenyo, the City Education Officer says that despite having huge population, most private schools in the city don’t enroll special needs learners.

Irwenyo noted most schools turn away children with special needs because they lack awareness of how to handle them.

He however, explains that apart from extreme disabilities, children with special needs are supposed to study with their peers so that they don’t have a challenge with integration.

Irwenyo says government is currently not encouraging the opening of more special needs school because it wants learners with special needs to study alongside their none special needs peers.

Gulu City currently has four special needs schools which include Gulu primary, Gulu prison, Laroo Adraa, and Gulu High school for secondary.
