Police Probe Presiding Officer Arrested on Voting Day in Oyam

Police at Oyam Central Police Station are investigating a presiding officer who was arrested on voting day during the local government elections.

The suspect, Charles P. Ojok, was serving as the presiding officer at Ogwal Mula Mula Code 002 (Awobe Odee Polling Barajonga), Myene Parish, Myene Sub-county. Ojok is accused of casting a vote at a polling station where he is neither registered nor a resident.

Francis Okongo, the Oyam District Police Commander says Ojok has been released on police bond for health reasons, but investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Joseph Omona, the Oyam District Returning Officer says the results from the affected polling station have been nullified.

Emmanuel Oyite, the official agent of NRM candidate Benson Walter Dila, who was contesting for the Oyam LC V seat, welcomes the Electoral Commission’s decision to nullify the results from the station, saying it was a fair step to safeguard the integrity of the election process.

Oyite also acknowledges the victory of Nelson Adea, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) flag bearer, in the Oyam LC V Chairperson race, saying the electorate exercised their democratic right and that the outcome should be respected.

According to results released on Friday morning by Returning Officer Joseph Omona, Nelson Adea garnered 45,914 votes (64.64%), Benson Walter Dila of the NRM polled 24,041 votes (33.84%), and independent candidate Peter Emuna received 1,078 votes (1.52%).
