Rising Tensions in Lamwo Over Migratory Cattle Movement

Tension is rising in Palabek Abera Sub-county, Lamwo District, after 618 head of cattle belonging to migratory Balaalo pastoralists entered the area, sparking fears of conflict between livestock keepers and crop farmers.

Okot Patrick, the LC III Chairperson of Palabek Abera says the cattle arrived on the 27th of January during the general election period adding that four kraals have been identified in Agula and Agwata Central villages.

Residents reports that the cattle have destroyed gardens, including cassava fields, leaving farmers anxious and frustrated.

A farmer in Agwata Central who preferred not to be named says the destruction threatens community survival.

Community members accuse some landowners of secretly leasing land to pastoralists; a move they say has deepened mistrust and conflict.

Additional concerns have emerged over recent land surveys, with residents fearing that parcels are being acquired without transparency or regard for customary land rights.

William Komakech, the Lamwo RDC says security agencies have launched operations to evict illegal Balaalo settlers.

Intelligence suggests herders are using alternative routes to bypass existing directives.
