Gulu Health System Strained as Staff Shortage Bites

Low staffing levels are placing growing pressure on the health system in Gulu District, raising concerns about service delivery and patient care across public health facilities.

A mid-year performance review by the district health department has revealed that only 42 percent of approved health worker positions are currently filled.

Out of 544 established posts, just 183 are occupied, leaving a significant gap in staffing at a time when demand for healthcare services remains high.

Health officials warn that the shortage is affecting the quality and efficiency of care, with existing staff forced to take on heavier workloads.

According to the review, this has led to longer waiting times for patients, increased fatigue among health workers, and challenges in maintaining consistent service standards.

Dr. Cana Kenneth, the District Health Officer describes the staffing crisis as severe and all round.

He notes that beyond the low numbers, there is also a mismatch in qualifications among available staff which further complicates service delivery.

District authorities say efforts are underway to address the crisis, including plans to accelerate recruitment and better align staff qualifications with facility needs.
