Gulu NGO Forum Calls for United Front Against Sovereignty Bill

Gulu NGO Forum is calling for a unified block against the controversial sovereignty bill.

Kenneth Lubangakene from Gulu NGO Forum notes with a deep concern that the intention of the bill is wicked.

He describes the bill as redundant with an intent of isolating Uganda and crippling it’s economy.

Lubangakene further says the bill poses threats to Uganda’s liberalized economy.

Dr Gilbert Olanya, the Kilak South Constituency Member of Parliament in Amuru District says the bill if passed into law will have a terrible impact on Ugandans considering some of the clauses contained within the draft bill.

He says the bill is politically motivated mainly targeting opposition politicians, parties and Non-Government Organizations.

The legislature urges the government to consider the economic impact rather than political interests while developing laws as 95% of organizations receive funds from abroad.

The bill was tabled before parliament on Wednesday last week by General David Muhoozi, the State Minister for Internal Affairs aiming to regulate foreign funding and influence on domestic policy.

It targets CSOs, media, and foreign-funded entities with no organization allowed to receive beyond 400 million shillings ($107,000) annually in foreign funding without Ministerial approval.
