RCC Threatens to close clinics over poor medical waste disposal

Peter Banya, the Acting Gulu Resident City Commissioner (RCC) has threatened to close clinics found improperly disposing medical waste.

This comes after medical waste was found dumped in Kay A, Bardege-Layibi division by a yet unknown clinic operator this week.

Banya notes that medical wastes are a health hazard and should be dumped in gazetted places such as incinerators for burning.

Improperly disposing of medical waste can lead to sharp injuries, chemical burns, and the spread of pathogens like HIV and hepatitis, according to medical experts.

According to the National Environment (Waste Management) Regulations, 2020, anybody who generates medical waste should ensure that the waste is managed by a waste handler authorized to manage that waste.
