Rwizi police commends rise in men reporting domestic violence cases

The Child and Family Protection Unit of the Rwizi region has commended men for coming out to report cases of domestic and sexual violence against them.

Vellah Mwakiire, the Child and Family Unit Regional commander, says that there is an increase in men reporting cases at police when battered or tortured in their homes, and this is seen in the cases received across the region.

She says that out of 10 cases that are registered daily in the region, four are men.

She, however, says that the numbers also vary depending on the season, noting that men report during the beginning of the school term or the end, and during coffee harvesting time.

Mwakiire says most men who report to police are always pleading with their women to take care of children, noting that the number of women abandoning their children is increasing.

She attributes this to the increased awareness and sensitization by the police and Civil society organizations.

Rita Ntegyerize, the Manger Humanity and Inclusion, says that the organization offers psychosocial support to gender based violence victims, and these are got depending on the survey done by other organizations dealing with violence.

She also narrates that awareness has contributed much towards the openness of men towards reporting domestic violence cases. Quoting the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Gender-Based Violence dashboard for quarter 2, Ntegyerize says that 96,308 were reached with awareness messages and sessions last year.
