The construction of a mortuary at Awach Health Center IV, the biggest health facility in Gulu district, is most likely set to be further delayed due to urgent need for the expansion of the maternity ward there.
The maternity ward which has a capacity of 10 beds currently admits between 16- 20 mothers daily, according to Dr Kenneth Cana, the District Health Officer.
Cana says many others are occupying the floor which exposes them and their babies to infections.
He says this has forced the health department to consider diverting funds meant for the construction of a mortuary towards expansion of the maternity ward.
The department had earmarked 100 million shillings for the first phase of the construction of a mortuary planned for the next financial year.
Meanwhile, Awach Health Center IV is currently struggling with storage of bodies in the absence of a mortuary.
