The business community in Kanyagoga has appealed to the office of the Deputy City Commissioner to conduct security operations in the area, especially around Independence Hospital, to help reduce cases of thuggery.
The call was made during a meeting held yesterday at the office of the Deputy City Commissioner, following concerns raised by traders about rising insecurity.
In an interview, Peter Banya, the Deputy City Commissioner for Pece-Laroo, urged the business community to coordinate among themselves and ensure security agencies are informed so they can provide support.
He adds that operations soon start, assuring residents of Kanyagoga that his office is committed to restoring peace and protecting the rights of people in Gulu City.
Mercy Atto, a businesswoman operating opposite Independence, says it has become difficult to run businesses at night due to fear of thugs.
She appeals to the police and army to enforce laws that deter such acts so that residents of Kanyagoga can live peacefully.
Opira Sunday, a resident, said thugs in the area are so feared that many people do not report incidents to the police or other security agencies.
Two months ago, police in Gulu City arrested about seven suspected thugs for stealing people’s property. They were detained at the Gulu Central Police Station.
