Six Districts in Acholi Sub Region; Omoro, Pader, Agago, Kitgum, Lamwo and Nwoya have embarked on beef production with support from the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries and the World Bank.
Information obtained from Bingi Patrick, the livestock lead person under Uganda climate Smart Agricultural transmission project for Omoro District, indicate that the government is supporting 450 people per district organized into 30 groups.
Each group consists of 15 members who will co- fund 20% while government will support them with 80% for purchasing improved breeds of cattle.
Bingi says they will use the Boran, Saiwal and Brahaman breeds because they are so good and grow within three years hence enabling farmers to earn quick money.
Bingi says Acholi Sub Region is endowed with good pasture but the program will also promote commercial pasture growth for support during the dry season and also help cattle fatten well.
This is because the cattle in Acholi Sub Region normally move a lot in the search for pasture hence lowering their productivity.
The program is also promoting climate Smart agriculture which will reduce green house gas per animal because they will less time on the farm
The program is also promoting bio gas as each group will have a bio gas plant installed to help in turning manure.
