The landscape department of Gulu City is preaching and encouraging the people of Gulu city to embrace evening irrigation as a means of reviving the trees that are already planted.
Over 500 tree seedlings have so far been planted and they died in Gulu city due to poor methods of irrigation especially during dry season, theft of tree seedlings by the community and laziness where some people don’t even care to check on the seedlings among others.
Alfred Okello, the Gulu City landscape officer has reveals that evening irrigation will help to revive the trees that the city and members of the community have planted so far by irrigating the trees atleast 3 times a week in the evening so as to keep the trees cool overnight.
Okello advises the people of Gulu city to use swamp water when irrigating, he adds that using tap water for irrigation is a waste of time because tap water is chlorinated and therefore harmful to the trees.
According to Okello, anybody who wants their trees to survive must use swamp water for irrigation and only spray in the evening hours.
Green spots within Gulu City such as Kaunda grounds where numerous royal palm trees were planted by parliament beside a public toilet in August 2024 as part of parliament social responsibility, now have most trees that have perished.
The Landscaping department of Gulu city has over the years spent millions of shillings in different tree planting exercises, others have survived but many have perished.
