Rural Communities Warned Against Bathing in Rivers Over Skin Infections

Yoweri Idiba, the Gulu District Health Officer in charge Environmental Health has said bathing in rivers and streams is contributing to skin infections among the rural communities.

Idiba says water from rivers and streams is typically meant for livestock and crop irrigation.

However, its common to find people in rural communities taking baths in them, exposing themselves to skin diseases.

Idiba explains that boarding primary schools which are congested are also a breeding ground for skin infections such as scabies.

He says that some dormitories are not hygienically clean and have poor lighting.

Ranked at number seven, skin infection is among top ten causes of disease in Gulu district, according to statistics from the Gulu district health office.

The statistics show that a total of 2,982 cases of skin infections were registered in Gulu district between mid-2025/2026.
