Monsignor Martine Agwe, the Vicar General of Gulu Archdiocese, has criticized Catholic-founded institutions named after Martyrs for failing to actively promote the legacy and values of the saints they are named after.
Speaking during the reunion and Patron Saint Day celebrations of Uganda Martyrs’ Centenary Primary School in Kitgum Municipality on Monday, Agwe said many schools, health facilities and churches in the Acholi Sub-region bear martyrs’ names “in memory” but remain reluctant when it comes to promoting Martyrs’ Day and the spirit of sacrifice.
In his sermon, the Vicar General challenges administrators of such institutions to go beyond the name and become active promoters of faith and moral values.
He argues that institutions named after the martyrs have a special responsibility to keep their story alive, especially among young people who may only associate it with public holidays.
Agwe also urges staff, teachers, and management of Catholic-founded schools, hospitals, and churches to take pride in their identity and focus on service delivery.
