After nearly 10 years of dormancy, East Acholi Cooperative Union Limited will complete its revival this Saturday, June 27, 2026, with elections for chairperson, vice chairperson, and treasurer.
According to Kitgum Principal District Commercial Officer Alex Opira, the election ends a revival process that started in March 2025 but was interrupted by interference.
The union will now install a full governance structure for the first time since its last Annual General Meeting in 2017.
Founded in 1951, the union serves farmers and entrepreneurs in Kitgum, Lamwo, Pader, and Agago districts.
Its work is to improve market access, provide financial services, and support members.
But financial mismanagement, lack of accountability, and leadership challenges after the death of board chairperson Kalmark Obote Acellam in 2019 led to its decline.
COVID-19 restrictions in 2021 made things worse.
District commercial officers have now trained primary societies to meet requirements.
