Kidepo valley conservation area to build dams

Zebras at Kidepo having water

The Kidepo Valley Conservation Area manager says they are working to address the straying of wild animals into community land by increasing access to water in the area.

Several cases of lions, elephants and buffaloes straying out of the park into communities are reported annually.

It’s believed that elephants move out of the park in search of water, which is not enough in the park.

Richard Muhabwe, the chief warden of Kidepo Valley Conservation Area, says they are desalting the three existing dams and also excavating seven new ones to ensure adequate water supply for the wildlife there.

Kidepo Valley National Park currently has over 1,000 elephants, 9,000 buffaloes, about 10 lions and 476 bird species.

Muhabwe says that the endangered species at the park include lions, cheetahs and budus, among others.
