Mob justice rises in Gulu city as community trust in police erodes

The Deputy City Commissioner of Pece-Laroo Division, Peter Banya, has blamed the rise in mob justice in Gulu City on a breakdown of public trust in the police, citing a justice system that he says fails to deliver accountability.

Banya made the remarks today during a press conference held at his office to provide updates on security in Gulu City.

Speaking to journalists, Banya appealed to the police to change how they handle suspects.

He claims that suspects are often arrested and later released without proper investigation.

Nancy Apiyo, a resident of Pece-Laroo, says corruption is eroding confidence in law enforcement.

She adds that increasing police salaries could help curb corruption and ensure cases are handled with care.

Last week, an unidentified suspected thief was killed by a mob in Kanyagoga.

Police reportedly arrived after the victim had already died.
