The current high fuel prices have highly affected earnings of boda-boda motorcyclists in Gulu City, according to a report.
Fuel prices went up in Uganda mainly because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, currency fluctuations and logistical costs.
A litre of petrol currently costs between 6,500 to 6,800 shillings at most fuel stations in Gulu city.
Simon Otto, a boda-boda motorcyclist says that he struggles to get customers on most days as pedestrians prefer to walk.
Emmy Ocen, the Chairperson Gulu City West Boda-boda Association says most of their members are struggling to make ends meet because pedestrians would rather walk to their workplaces than pay an extra cost of between 500-1,000 shillings.
Ocen says that this has greatly impacted on members’ ability to pay back loans for motorcycles they acquired.
80% of Gulu City West Boda-boda association members are operating on loans which require them to pay back between 90,000 to 100,000 shillings per week, according to the chairperson.
