Gulu University has retooled its academic staff as it prepares to move away from knowledge based curriculum to a competence based education training (CBET) curriculum.
David Davy Okello Owiny, the deputy vice chancellor in charge academics says many university graduates have little skills for implementing what they have learnt because the current knowledge based curriculum only measures what they know and not what they can do.
Owiny says this is the reason many university graduates are unable to start businesses or demonstrate what they’re capable of to address societal challenges.
Associate professor Basil Mugonola, the coordinator of the CBET notes that many university graduates miss out on employment opportunities because they are unable to express themselves or even write a proper curriculum vita.
Meanwhile, Dr. Doreen Chemutai, the head of gender mainstreaming at Gulu University says gender inclusion in CBET will ensure that the potential of both men and women is tapped into.
She notes that few women are engaged in professional employment despite women outnumbering men in population.
The three-day training that started on Wednesday was held at the University’s new library.
Gulu University has a total of 273 academic staff.
