The Deputy Mayor of Bardege-Layibi Division, Patrick Okello, has pledged to ensure the removal of human remains that were unearthed during road opening works in the division.
Okello made the pledge yesterday during a press conference convened to update journalists on new developments in the division.
Speaking in an interview, Okello said his office received numerous complaints from residents about remains that were left uncollected during road opening works carried out before he assumed office.
He explains that while the division always allocates a budget for such activities, the budget had already been spent by the time he took office, and that he is now waiting for the next financial year budget to address the issue.
Gloria Alum, a resident of Bardege-Layibi Division, says the previous division leadership was marred by corruption and appeals to the new leadership to work hard to solve the problems affecting residents.
She adds that some families left the remains of their loved ones behind because they could not afford to exhume and meet the reburial expenses even as the roads are already in use.
James Ocan, another resident, says in Kasubi cell, many graves were left untouched because relatives of the deceased had migrated to the villages and were difficult to trace.
He advises leaders to work closely with local residents and elders to help identify grave sites to ensure a proper and respectful removal process.
