Security in Lamwo District has scored major gains in the last two weeks, recovering four illegal guns, nine motorcycles and arresting 29 suspects in a renewed crackdown along the Uganda-South Sudan border.
According to Williams Komakech, the Resident District Commissioner who also chairs the District Security Committee, the operation has disrupted gun smuggling and motorcycle theft networks operating across northern Uganda.
He explains that the four guns were recovered from three locations in Palabek: Anaka village, Palabek Gem Sub-county, Ayu Alali, Palabek Kal Sub-county, Paloda, Palabek Ogilli Sub-county, all in Lamwo district.
Komakech says intelligence indicates the firearms were mainly being used to commit crimes in Kitgum, Lira, Gulu and parts of Lamwo, and in the same period, security teams also recovered nine motorcycles.
Komakech confirms that 29 suspects have been arrested and others were charged.
Among them are three South Sudanese nationals accused of working with Ugandan youths.
Last week, one of the cases involved the murder of 45year old Solomon Ocen, from Padolo village in Palabek Kal Sub-county.
Solomon was shot while riding motorcycle UEB 990P before stealing his motorcycle.
