Over 100 elephants camp in community gardens in Agago

Over 100 elephants and buffaloes have camped in community gardens in Agago district destroying crops in sub counties bordering Kidepo Valley Game Park.

Wilson Otto, the L.C V Chairperson Agago district says that the elephants which strayed from Kidepo Valley Game Park have been in community gardens for the last one month.

Otto says Uganda Wild Life Authority (UWA) game rangers are currently on ground trying to drive the elephants back into the park.

The chairperson says the damage caused on crops has worsened the food crisis in sub counties like Lira-Kato and Lapono.

Agago district is one of the most hit with hunger following the failure of crops due to a long dry spell that has affected most of Acholi Sub region.

Reports show that 15 deaths and 351 cases of severe malnutrition were registered in Agago district between June and July.
