Uganda, in its capacity as chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), has condemned what it described as an act of aggression by the United States against Venezuela, following military action that led to the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Delivering a statement to the United Nations Security Council on behalf of NAM, Uganda accused the United States of carrying out armed attacks on both civilian and military locations in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, as well as in other cities across the country.
The bloc says the actions constitute a grave breach of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
According to the statement, read by Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Adonia Ayebare, the attacks amount to an act of war that threatens regional and international peace and security, while endangering the lives of Venezuelan citizens.
NAM argues that such actions undermine the core principles of sovereignty, equality among states, and peaceful coexistence.
The Non-Aligned Movement called for an immediate end to all hostilities against Venezuela and demanded full respect for the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence, and right to self-determination.
