High Court Jails UPDF Officer, Policeman, Civilians for 2018 Killing of Rukungiri Tycoon

The High Court in Kampala has convicted a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer, a police officer, and five civilians for the 2018 murder of Rukungiri businessman Goddie Ainobushoborozi, who was killed over a disputed debt.

In a ruling delivered yesterday afternoon, Justice Alex Ajiji found Capt. Moses Akiba, Detective Corporal Lawrence Monday, and five others guilty of conspiring to commit murder.

One accused person, Magezi Nicholas, was acquitted after the court established that he was in police custody at the time the crime was committed.

Court records indicate that on the night of December 8, 2018, Ainobushoborozi was lured from his home with promises that he would be paid 70 million shillings allegedly owed to him by a man identified as Muheki, after earlier efforts to recover the money had failed.

Prosecution witness Jude Mugumya testified that he accompanied the deceased on a motorcycle along the Rukungiri–Buhunga road, where they encountered masked assailants who had mounted a roadblock using stones and logs.

The attackers, some of whom were armed with a rifle, launched an ambush.

Mugumya fled the scene, leaving Ainobushoborozi behind, who was subsequently shot dead.

Police investigations recovered two spent cartridges and mobile phones at the crime scene, while the victim’s body was taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary.

Sentencing for the seven convicted individuals is expected today.

Under the Penal Code Act, murder attracts a maximum sentence of death, with life imprisonment as an alternative.
