Apiriti Border Livestock Market in Madi Opei Sub-county, Lamwo District, is set to resume weekly operations next month with authorities expecting the revival to boost livestock trade and cross-border commerce with South Sudan.
Oyet Sisto Ocen, the Lamwo District LC5 Chairperson says the market will operate every Friday, giving farmers and traders a predictable platform to sell livestock and increasing locally raised revenue.
Ochira Wilfred, the District Production Officer says the market already has facilities including livestock offloading areas, water, veterinary services, toilets and offices.
William Komakech, the Resident District Commissioner says security agencies will provide 24-hour security at the market, following concerns from Greater Acholi Animal Traders Association Chairperson Okwanga Geoffrey over insecurity along the border.
Komakech has also appealed for tax measures that encourage trade.
Ojuko James, the Madi Opei Town Council Veterinary Officer says sick animals will not be allowed for sale.
