Chess Promotion Campaign Launched Across Northern Uganda

David Livingstone Amone, the General Secretary for the Northern Region Chess Association has unveiled efforts aimed popularising chess across the region.

The campaign which aims at reducing the rising youth crimes seeks to on-board new players with professional skills in chess as a sports across the greater North Districts in Acholi, Lango, and West Nile.

Amone says their programmes will specifically target main prisons, remand homes, ghetto youth structures in urban centers as well secondary and primary schools through district Education Officers noting that such institutions hold the highest numbers of young people whose talent are not fully exploited.

He explains that chess is a very unique game involving critical thinking which is an important component for one’s mental development and strengthens the reasoning capacity impacting behaviour of individuals in the society.

He says that each district will receive 30 chess boards under an arrangement between the Northern Region Chess Association and Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) this year for that purpose.

While assuming office in December 2025 Andrew Bakiza, the President of Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) committed himself to mobilise resources for the strengthening of regional chess development across the country.
