The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is investigating the death of an elephant whose carcass was discovered floating on Lake Albert near Abok Landing Site in Panyimur Town Council, Pakwach District, over the weekend.
Residents and local leaders say the carcass was first spotted on Saturday, leaning against fishing boats anchored on the lake before being moved to the shoreline.
Panyimur Town Council LC3 Chairperson, Pennuel Oribker, says the elephant was already in an advanced stage of decomposition when it was discovered.
He notes that preliminary observations by UWA officials suggested the animal may have drowned, possibly following a confrontation with other wildlife.
Abok Landing Site Chairperson, Michael Odongo, says UWA officials warned residents against consuming the carcass, as the exact cause of death had not yet been established.
He adds that a burial site was identified where the carcass was later disposed of.
Meanwhile, Wilson Kagoro, the Chief Warden of Murchison Falls National Park, confirms that samples were collected from the carcass and taken for laboratory analysis to establish the cause of death. He says the elephant is estimated to have been between two and three years old.
