Peter Banya, the Gulu Resident City Commissioner (RCC) in charge Laroo-Pece Division says there will be no chairperson for Gulu main market in the next leadership.
Banya recently suspended the leadership of Gulu Main Market Association and the market SACCO whose term of office ended in February this year.
He withdrew the market’s two vehicles which are currently parked at Gulu Central Police Station and handed over the keys to the Town Clerk who is now expected to organize elections of the next leadership.
The RCC however said that instead of a chairperson, the market will have an administrator who will be appointed by the Town Clerk, in accordance with the Market Act 2023.
According to the Market Act, the market administrator is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of the market, liaising with the administrative authority on the affairs of the market and ensuring general maintenance of orderliness in the market.

Banya said that vendors will elect sector heads and their deputies in the upcoming elections.
According to the Market Act, sectors are organized based on the goods sold and services provided in the market.
A person elected as a sector head or deputy shall serve for a period of two years and may be eligible for re-election, according to the Act.
