Gulu regional incinerator to be operational in November

The Ministry of Health says the Gulu regional incinerator located at Angaya in Unyama Sub County, Gulu district is set to be operational by November.

The incinerator was constructed at 4 billion shillings with a loan secured from the World Bank in 2021 but is yet to start operating.

The facility has a capacity to burn 450 kilograms of medical waste per hour which is faster that the incinerator at Gulu regional referral hospital which can only handle between 8-15 kilograms of medical waste.

Emmanuel Ainebyona, the head of Communications at the Ministry of Health says the Ministry is currently in the process of procuring a power back up and a generator.

He says procurement which is being handled by the Global Fund is being done from outside Uganda.

The operationalization of the incinerator is expected to ease disposal of health care waste in the Acholi Sub region.

Walter Uriekwun, the Principal Hospital Administrator at Gulu Regional Referral says the littering of medical waste and air pollution will be controlled once the regional incinerator is operationalized.
