A section of government primary schools in Gulu district are focused on ensuring that all their candidates are absorbed in either secondary or vocational schools instead of focusing on first grade for their candidates like most schools.
Grace Akullu, the head teacher Awach Central primary School says their focus is to eliminate Division X and U which deny candidates a chance to progress with formal education.
The school which had no first grade among its 27 candidates of 2025, registered 17 second grade and 10 third grade.
Akullu who was sharing the school’s good practices with education officials from Tororo district yesterday said that regular support supervision and team work is their winning formula.
At Panykworo primary school, Denis Okot, the head teacher says the school’s priority is not first grade as second and third grades are equally good and offer candidates opportunities to progress with formal education.
Okot says that the school which has an enrollment of 1,074 learners, allocates every Wednesday afternoon to co-curricular activities like sports, music, dance and drama among others as they provide therapy to learners.
This comes at a time when schools especially privately owned are on the spot for focusing more on having their candidates score first grade mainly as a marketing strategy to attract higher enrollment.
