Outgoing Chairperson of Acholi Parliamentary Group Hon. Anthony Akol has said he will not be seeking Re-election as Chairperson of Acholi Parliamentary group.
Akol in a Media statement said that his main focus will be oversight role and fighting household Poverty in his Constituency.
Akol further urges his fellow MPs to elect Acholi Parliamentary group leaders who will champion unity and fight against the high level of Poverty in Acholi sub-region.
Akol was elected Chairperson of APG in July 2021.
APG has since faced significant internal divisions and power struggles. In early 2024, a breakaway faction announced Amos John Okot (Agago North MP) as their chairperson, a move that Akol challenged as illegal and lacking quorum.
Due to these ongoing squabbles, Acholi cultural leaders and elders intervened and appointed Justice Minister Norbert Mao as the interim chairperson to oversee reconciliation.
Favour FM understands that Acholi Elders led by Hon. Okello-Okello, Chief Justice
Emeritus, Alphonse Owiny-dollo and other elders have met with the recently elected MPs to find the best ways of putting the Leadership of Acholi Parliamentary group to Champion Acholi agenda.
