Katakwi district summons headteachers as wave of school strikes sparks concern

Katakwi District authorities have announced plans to meet all secondary school headteachers in a bid to address a growing wave of student strikes that has disrupted learning and caused widespread destruction of school property across the district.

The move follows the latest strikes at Priscilla Girls Secondary School and Katakwi High School on the night of June 6, 2026, which left classrooms, administration blocks, school fences, CCTV cameras, the science library, a girls’ dormitory, and other property damaged.

The value of the destroyed property has not yet been established.

Katakwi District LCV Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo says district leaders are concerned about the recurring unrest in secondary schools and are seeking to establish the root causes of the strikes.

According to Omolo, district officials are meeting today, June 10, 2026, with all secondary school headteachers to discuss school management and identify factors contributing to the unrest.

He notes that preliminary findings from Priscilla Girls Secondary School pointed to disagreements between students and teachers, including concerns related to food and welfare issues.

An unspecified number of students from Priscilla Girls Secondary School were also arrested in connection with the strike.

Meanwhile, three teachers from Priscilla Girls Secondary School, whose identities have not been disclosed, were summoned to record statements as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.
