Lamwo district local government is in the process of drafting a child protection ordinance aimed at ensuring that school age going children do not stay home.
Hundreds of children of school going age are currently roaming in communities, according to reports.
This is despite the availability of universal Primary Education (UPE) schools in the district.
Sisto Oyet Ocen, the L.C V Chairperson Lamwo district says that most parents who don’t take their children to school, do not want to pay PTA fees charged by schools.
At UPE schools, parents are required to pay Parents Teachers Association (PTA) fees which are usually as low as 30,000 shillings to supplement government funding.
Oyet explains that parents will be arrested for keeping their children at home once the ordinance comes into force.
The chairperson says that a committee comprising of local leaders, school management committee and police will be formed to forcefully collect PTA fees from such parents.
