MAAIF Hands Over 49,817 Hoes to Kitgum Farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has delivered more than 49,817 hand hoes to Kitgum District Local Government in a move aimed at boosting agricultural production and improving household incomes.

Barnabas Opiyo, the District Entomology Officer who received the consignment on behalf of the Kitgum District Production Office, describes the delivery as a routine intervention by the ministry to support farmers.

He says the hand hoes will be distributed to all households across the district’s 22 administrative units, including Kitgum Municipality.

According to the 2024 Uganda Population and Housing Census, Kitgum District has over 44,000 households.

Opiyo says the distribution plan ensures that each household will receive one hoe.

Sam Odong, the Kitgum District Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, says the hoes are intended to improve farming practices and raise living standards.

He pledges that the Chief Administrative Officer’s office will oversee equitable distribution to ensure that no farmer is left out.

Tony Blaire Tolit Olanya Olenge, the Kitgum District Chairperson, thanked the government through MAAIF for the timely donation.

He says the hoes will enable farmers to engage in more productive agriculture and help reduce poverty at the household level, noting that agriculture remains the backbone of Uganda’s economy.

Kitgum Resident District Commissioner Jimmy Ssegawa Ebil said the delivery signals that President Yoweri Museveni has begun implementing his pledge for an active term.

He adds that his office will ensure the hoes reach the intended beneficiaries without delays or interference.
