Disabilities Rights Advocates in Northern Uganda are calling on government and development partners to provide assistive devices to Persons living with disabilities in Northern Uganda.
According to Edonga Tom Patrick, a Trainer of Trainers with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association Uganda (SHAU), many Children living with disabilities in Northern Uganda lack assistive devices like Wheel Chairs, canes, Crutches among others to help them during their movements.
Edonga adds that Persons living with disabilities especially Children are greatly affected because many of them come from Poor Families who cannot afford these devices.
He urges government and development partners to support these Children with disabilities so that they can live decent lives.
Edonga continues that SHAU Uganda brought together Children with Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus plus their Friends for a one weeks Camp at Regent International School in Gulu City to help them bond together and understand their various challenges.
19 year old Jovia Lanyero , a girl living with Hydrocephalus says that many of them face a number of challenges especially in their movements because majority do not have these devices to help them move.
She adds that the one week Camp has helped them to learn from each other and has helped them to bond with their Friends
According to the 2024 National Population and Housing Census, Uganda has approximately 1,289,513 persons with disabilities (PWDs) aged five years and above.
