One More Body Recovered From Collapsed Kisasi Building

Three bodies have been recovered from a collapsed building in Kisasi following a joint search by police and Kampala Capital City Authority – KCCA teams.

The three-storey building under construction in Kisota Zone, Kikaya, Kisasi, collapsed from the top floor on Friday, with builders on site.

Residents say a sudden, thunderous bang sent people running, mistaking it for an earthquake.

Moments later, a massive cloud of dust revealed that the building next door had collapsed.

Neighbors, led by John Kisembo, the Kisota Road area chairperson say the building caved in suddenly while several construction workers were on site.

He says residents rescued eight workers, some were hurt while fleeing the first floor, while others were pulled from the rubble, and all eight were taken to Malcolm Medical Centre in Kisasi by Red Cross teams who were among the first responders.

Rachel Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson identifies the three male victims as Jonathan Kivumbi, Rasta James, and a third person who has yet to be identified.

By press time, the rescue operation was still ongoing as teams dug through the rubble searching for possible bodies and survivors, while the hunt for the site engineer and the site owner also continued.
