Authorities of Patiko Sub County in Gulu district say they will carry out strict monitoring at Patiko-Ajulu market to ensure that school going children keep away from the market.
Patiko-Ajulu weekly market which used to be held on Sundays was recently moved to Wednesday after complains from Christian denominations that they were experiencing a low turn up of Christians in their churches.
The Catholic, Anglican and Born-Again church leaders were also reportedly concerned that the few Christians who turned up for services do not concentrate.
This prompted the sub county council to resolve to adjust the weekly market day from Sunday to Wednesday.
But this later caused concerns from other community members who say the change would affect school attendance.
However, Patrick Komakech, the L.CIII Chairperson Patiko Sub county says, they are standing by the decision and will instead carry out strict monitoring to ensure that school children don’t attend.
Komakech says that the market also hosts an auction day once every 22nd of the month.
Patiko Ajulu market generates 250,000 shillings monthly in local revenue for Patiko Sub county.
