The persons with disability in Gulu district have demanded to be included in the women situation room which they have been excluded from.
A women’s situation room is an initiative by the Women’s International Peace Center, a non-governmental organization that ensures peace during elections, it was used during the 2016 and 2021 and 2026 general elections.
The women’s situation room consists of 3 physical rooms during elections where different stakeholders ranging from Women’s International Peace Center, Uganda People’s Defense Forces, police, media and political team among others and their work is to receive the different grievances happening and act immediately to restore the situation before, during and after elections.
During a review meeting of the Gulu district peace committee on 23rd May 2026, Aciro Teddy Luwa, the councilor 5 representing the persons with disability in Gulu district raised a concern why the persons with disability are not included in the women situation room.
Luwa said that’s a form of discrimination because their representative should also be there to listen and forward issues of persons with disability during elections.
The communications director for Women’s International Peace Center, Martha Tukahirwa promised that in the coming elections, they will include the persons with disability in the women’s situation room.
Tukahirwa says, currently they have 4 women situation rooms but they are planning to open 4 more to make 8 in different places within Uganda.
