A 34-year-old pregnant woman has died at Bududa Hospital after her family alleged that she spent several hours crying for emergency medical attention as her condition deteriorated.
Sandra Khabuya, a resident of Namarare Village, Nabafu Parish, Bushiribo Sub-county in Bududa District, died at about 11 p.m. yesterday after being admitted to the hospital with pregnancy-related complications.
Khabuya, who was reportedly about four months pregnant, was also employed as a secretary in the Trade Department of Bududa District Local Government.
Her sister and attendant, Sylvia Namome, says Khabuya was taken to Bududa Hospital at about 10 a.m. after developing complications.
Namome says Khabuya was initially examined by Dr Charles Mushikoma, who administered medication before leaving the ward at around midday.
She alleges that Khabuya received no further medical attention between midday and about 4 p.m., despite repeatedly crying for help as her condition worsened.
According to Namome, the family eventually sought the doctor’s intervention, prompting Mushikoma to return and attend to Khabuya before handing over her care to a midwife identified as Edina Nakusi.
Namome alleges that by then Khabuya was vomiting, bleeding heavily, and experiencing severe pain.
She says Khabuya pleaded to be taken to the theatre for evacuation because of the bleeding and pain, but the midwife instead instructed her to push.
The family says they continued asking for emergency assistance as Khabuya’s condition deteriorated, but she eventually died.
Khabuya’s death comes amid previous complaints involving patients at the same facility.
In May this year, 31-year-old Jenifer Nasaka, a resident of Bunasaba Central Village, Bumakita Parish, Nalwanza Sub-county in Bududa District, was also reported to have died amid allegations of neglect at Bududa Hospital.
Another patient, Aidah Bisikwa, was similarly reported to have died amid allegations of neglect. The latest death is likely to renew calls for authorities to investigate complaints about the quality and timeliness of emergency care at Bududa Hospital.
