School Absenteeism Trend Shifts from Teachers to Learners in Gulu

Gulu district education department has reported a changing trend in school absenteeism noting that it has changed from teacher absenteeism to pupil absenteeism.

Atim Harriet Oyet, the District Education Officer for Gulu district says it used to be the teachers missing school those days and the pupils would have no one to teach them but the trend has changed nowadays where the teachers are present but children to be taught are absent.

Atim says the introduction of TELA system (Teacher Effectiveness and Learner Achievement system), a performance management and monitoring tool designed for curbing absenteeism and improve educational outcomes has helped teachers improve on late coming and absenteeism.

According to Atim, as of this week, 75% of the school children are at school while the remaining 25% are still at home helping their parents with garden work.

She says parents need to be reminded that the children have to report early enough to school because it is very difficult for them to cope up with whatever they missed during their absence.
