Schools warned against illegal boarding facilities

The Education Department in Gulu City has warned schools against operating illegal boarding facilities.

A circular notice from Innocent Ahimbisibwe, the Town Clerk dated 6th May 2026 cautions head teachers against operating illegal boarding facilities.

The letter seen by Favour FM indicates that schools that fail to heed the caution will be dealt with accordingly.

Richard Irwenyo, the Gulu City Education Officer says all primary schools are supposed to operate as day schools unless if authorized by the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Education and Sports.

Primary schools in Gulu City authorized to operate boarding facilities include; Negri, Mary Immaculate, Gulu Primary, Laroo Adraa, Elshaddai and Mother Ludia.

Irwenyo advises parents to take their children to schools that are nearest to them.

This comes a few weeks after a pupil of Layibi Central Primary School was killed by a mob for allegedly waylaying people at night.

Stephen Obedgui was killed on the night of 21st April 2026 after him and three other pupils allegedly sneaked out of the school to waylay locals in Kolo quarters, Layibi.
