Security guard arrested for allege murder of his girlfriend

A 37-year-old security guard is being held at Gulu Central Police Station after allegedly killing his girlfriend in a violent domestic incident in Gulu City.

The suspect, Albert Okonye, who works with 7 Guidance Security Company, is accused of killing Barbara Faith Akello last night.

Police say the incident occurred at around 11:00 pm at Shine Petrol Station in Layibi Centre, where the suspect was on duty.

According to a statement by David Ongom Mudong, the victim had visited the suspect at his workplace when a disagreement broke out.

Preliminary findings indicate that the confrontation began after the suspect allegedly suspected the deceased of being involved with another man, following a phone call she received.

Police say Okonye then used the butt of his gun to repeatedly strike the victim on the head, inflicting fatal injuries.

A colleague who attempted to intervene was allegedly threatened by the suspect, who also reportedly tried to shoot him before fleeing the scene.

Security later tracked down and arrested the suspect, who had abandoned his firearm at the scene.

The weapon, an SMG rifle with a broken butt, was recovered by investigators.

Mudong says crime scene officers documented the area, and the body was taken to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examination.

Mudong condemns the violent action taken by the guard to commit murder resulting from a simple domestic misunderstanding which could have been resolved through dialogue.

He says, upon conclusion of investigations, the file shall be submitted to the Resident City Attorney for legal guidance before the suspect is produced in court for prosecution.
