Teachers in Gulu City have been asked to stop teaching beyond class hours in compliance with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Education and Sports.
According to the Ministry of Education and Sports, the official teaching time for primary and post-primary institutions runs from 8:00am to 4:30pm.
For pre-primary (nursery) schools, official hours are 8:00am to 12:00pm.
Richard Irwenyo, the Gulu City Education Officer says there are schools that are teaching children past school hours with others even teaching during prep time hence forcing parents to pick their children from school very late.
Irwenyo says the curriculum was designed to be handled in a particular period of time and there is no need for rushing because this tires the brain of learners.
He says if the school has an arrangement with the parents to teach their children until late then it’s okay but they should know that an official time for teaching exists which should therefore be followed.
Irwenyo further says that over pumping knowledge into the child is a waste of time because they won’t even grasp what is being pumped into them.
