Members of the Teso Parliamentary Group (TPG) have appealed to President Yoweri Museveni to allow former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among access to specialised medical treatment, saying her health has deteriorated after weeks of confinement at her Nakasero residence.
The legislators, who say they had previously refrained from speaking out because of a climate of fear surrounding the matter, argued that Among’s deteriorating health now required urgent intervention beyond the care she has been receiving at home.
Their rare public intervention comes against the backdrop of heightened security around Among’s residence and growing concern among political leaders following the reported arrest of Maggie Etilu, the Amuria District Woman MP, by security operatives shortly after she visited the former Speaker’s home.
The incident is widely believed to have discouraged many political leaders from publicly commenting on or visiting Among.
Addressing journalists yesterday after visiting Among at her residence, the legislators said they found her in a worrying physical and emotional state and appeal to the President to balance justice with compassion.
Reading the group’s statement, Peter Paul Emaju said the delegation was deeply disturbed by Among’s condition after weeks of confinement.
Since her confinement began in May, only a small number of political, cultural and religious leaders have been granted access to Among.
Many others have reportedly stayed away over fears of possible reprisals following the reported arrest of Maggie Etilu after her visit.
