

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is on the spot for not connecting villages neighbouring Gulu City to the National Power Grid.
The power distribution company is blamed for lack of economic growth in the periphery of the city.
Residents of Abwoch in Omoro district which is about 8 kms from Gulu city say their homes are not connected to electricity despite being a few meters from the new power sub-station.
They say the lack of power has made it impossible for them to engage in value addition activities.
The issue formed part of the discussions during an engagement meeting organized last week at Boma Hotel in Gulu City by Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
Colleen Karayu, the UEDCL area manager Gulu however says the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development is directly responsible for making sure that power is extended to villages.
She says, there is over 80 megawatts of power unutilized at the moment in Gulu and calls for the establishment of factories for the power to be utilized.
