DP Breaks NRM Grip in Nwoya, Takes Two of Three MP Seats

The Democratic Party (DP) scored notable gains in Nwoya District, winning two of the three parliamentary seats in the just-concluded elections, an outcome that unfolded in the political backyard of Richard Todwong, the Secretary General of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Results released by the Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Daniel Baguma, showed that the DP’s strong showing came despite sustained campaign efforts by Todwong to secure a clean sweep of parliamentary seats for the NRM in the district.

In Nwoya County, the contest was decided by a handful of votes.

DP candidate Geoffrey Denish Opiyo edged past Todwong’s own brother, Tony Awany, by just 22 votes, a razor-thin margin, loaded with symbolism.

In Nwoya East, DP incumbent Charles Geoffrey Okello held onto his seat, defeating the NRM challenger in another closely fought race.

The district’s Woman Member of Parliament seat remained in the party’s hands after first-time contender Christine Lanyero Awany won decisively, defeating the incumbent and a crowded field of challengers.

Justine Odong Ajaji, the Nwoya District NRM Publicity Secretary points not to opposition strength, but to internal divisions.

He says that candidates who lost party primaries later returned as independents hence weakening official flag bearers and confusing voters.
