Police in North Kyoga have arrested a businessman accused of dealing in stolen motorcycles and forged logbooks, following a theft in Kampala that was tracked across the country.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson says 54-year-old Okello Tom Opio, is in custody at Lira City Central Police Station after a joint intelligence-led operation led to the raiding of his second-hand motorcycle shop.
According to Okema, the operation targeted Excel Company in Lira City on Saturday morning.
It followed the theft of a motorcycle – registration number UFZ 386L – belonging to Mukungu Ismail, which was reported at Kabalagala Police Station in Kampala.
Okema says the stolen motorcycle had been blacklisted by ICT headquarters in Kampala and it was later sighted in Gulu District with Okot Innocent who led police to the Lira City dealership which he claims sold him the bike.
He adds that during the search at Excel Company, officers recovered twelve Bajaj Boxer motorcycles, over one hundred suspected forged motorcycle logbooks, and assorted spare parts.
Okema notes that the stolen motorcycle from Kampala has already been recovered in Gulu and will be transferred to Kabalagala Police Station along with the relevant suspects.
Investigations are ongoing to profile the company, it’s owner and to determine the source of all the motorcycles and spare parts traded by the business.
